Discourses and projects

Presentations, publications, products for student use and explorations:

Web and other applications:

  1. mathessentials.ca a math practice web-site focusing on calculations initially thought to help prepare students for introductory statistics. (not being used since 2019 – some of the games were pretty cool and had cool graphics, but are flash based)
  2. statcat.ca practice with reading health science research scenarios and sensing the data types that were used (or should be used) in those scenarios.  The sophistication came from hints provided in ‘simpler game’ that could be removed in more complex game.  Still used in 2024, but could use a refresh, ad additional module for hypothesis testing.
  3. bit.ly/henup   or https://www.healthnumeracyproject.com/gizmo/login is a webapp built for integration into courses, with some principles of the above two, but less of a focus on calculations than mathessentials and more on building what some call number sense, along with an attempt to pin down the sorts of skills and conceptualizations important to introductory statistics.
